UX / Product Designer

User Experience / Product Designer

We’re looking for someone to own the design of our web and mobile Public Library Catalog product.

You might call yourself an Interaction Designer, UX Designer, or Product Designer. The bottom line is that you design frameworks for people to engage in online experiences. You’re well-versed in the tools of the trade, have a strong eye for visual design, and can show the research and thinking that went into whatever you do. You ask good questions, tell a good story, and imagine yourself in someone else’s shoes. You want to make digital products that are the perfect blend of utility and delight.

In this role you’ll have opportunity to design new features and refresh existing features for web and mobile products that reach millions of public library users all over North America, New Zealand and Australia.

What you’ll do

  • Own your products (BiblioCore) from a ux design and strategy perspective
  • Conduct user research and usability testing
  • Work with the product manager to define requirements
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to determine how best to make your designs a reality through agile iterations
  • Provide visual design specifications, manipulate CSS, and provide guidance and expertise from a graphic/visual design, colour theory, and typographical design perspective
  • Think in terms of patterns, components, and systems to support cross-product design consistency
  • Look for opportunities to improve our product wherever possible through user research, heuristic analysis, competitive analysis, and keeping your eye on established and emerging design patterns

What you bring

You:

  • have at least three years’ experience designing for the web
  • take a user-centred approach to what you create without losing sight of business objectives -- It's all about balance
  • work iteratively and collaboratively with your product team to find the right design for the context
  • sweat the details: you know that microinteractions, careful attention to screen text, and the smallest visual design choices can mean the difference between an ok user experience and a great user experience
  • training and/or experience in graphic/visual design
  • empathy for the broadest set of people who use the public library and an a desire to serve them by making complex concepts and systems easier to understand
  • communicate your findings and help us to understand the best course of action based on data, design patterns, and
  • have an interest in building online communities
  • are comfortable with the idea of working in an Agile development shop and the challenges that come with that

Some nice to haves

  • Familiarity with Sketch, Axure RP, or other tool combinations that enable you to iterate and communicate designs in various levels of fidelity
  • Experience with or interest in manipulating HTML and CSS as part of your work
  • An affinity for the core values of public libraries
